Examples Of Terriers (Part 2)

Cairn Terrier: The cairn terrier is a popular and favorite choice of breed, if not because of Toto in the Wizard of Oz then because of its compact size. However, trainers have had difficulties with aggression and housebreaking in this terrier. When the cairn is well trained, it is a true pleasure to live with. A warm and personable breed, it can make a great dog for kids.

Dandie Dinmont Terrier: This is a great dog and the only thing to specify about this terrier is that they are all very cute and capable of good obedience. However, they are also all very stubborn but eventually train well despite this streak.

Fox Terrier (Smooth): The smooth fox terrier is a smart, quick little dog with tremendous energy and play drive. Basic training generally goes very well. Problems usually stem from aggression to other dogs and cats, and is a result of their innate drive to hunt and kill rats.

Fox Terrier (Wire): The wirehaired fox terrier is a great little breed that is similar to the smooth fox terrier in character. Owners of these dogs have experienced very enjoyable training sessions with wirehaired terriers and found them quite easy to train. Problem behaviors may include digging, excessive barking, house soiling, and aggression. They also will run away if given the opportunity

Irish Terrier: The Irish terrier is fairly well known for their persistent dog aggression. Trainers have successfully trained this breed in obedience, and many of these dogs were very easygoing individuals. There are also several known cases of aggression in the Irish terrier. Their personalities are somewhat childlike.

Kerry Blue Terrier: The Kerry blue terrier is a beautiful, stately type of breed that is very energetic and generally full of attitude. Once the primary relationship issues are resolved, this breed may excel in basic obedience. To achieve compliance, it is important to teach the dog the structural hierarchy in order to gain his respect. Known for their tendency toward dog aggression, Kerries can live in harmony with others.

Welsh Terrier: The Welsh terrier is a medium-size spunky Lakeland/Airedale look-alike. Barking and digging may be behavioral issues associated with this breed.

West Highland White Terrier: The West Highland is a very cute little dog often mistaken for a white Scotty. The Westie is a nice dog for older dog owners because it is small enough to easily handle. It has the spunk and personality indicative of a terrier. Also, this is a nice breed for a moderately active child because when called upon, they have great energy and love to play.
